Kupka’s Piano‘s debut studio album is available NOW! You can purchase a digital copy from bandcamp here. Hard copies will be available at our launch event (7pm, 7th November, at The Burrow in West End) and any future Kupka concerts until they’re sold out.
We are so excited to finally be releasing this album – it’s the result of roughly a year’s direct work: rehearsing at our residency in Bundanon last December, recording in UQ’s Nickson Room, editing and mastering with the incredible Mark Smith at Real Productions, with stunning artwork and design produced by Inkahoots (image above). We couldn’t be happier with the result.
The album includes my 2016 work Olive for flute + flute, a semi-improvised duo specifically for performance by Jodie Rottle and myself. It’s dedicated to my parents for all the support they’ve given me and my music over the years, and particularly while I was studying in Belgium. There’s some sneaky cameo appearances from Messiaen and a pair of pied butcherbirds (I got OBSESSED with butcherbird songs during my last few months in Europe, European birds just don’t cut the mustard). So yeah, it’s kind of a special piece to me.
Also on the disc are works by Alan Lawrence, Jakob Bragg, Chris Dench’s phenomenally beautiful flux (2016), written for the ensemble, and Liam Flenady’s wonderfully bizarre braneworlds (2016). You’ll love it. Probably. Almost definitely. Anyway, you won’t be bored.
